The city of Hays has a colorful history as a frontier town with the Fort Hays Historic Site and legends such as James Butler Hickok, George Armstrong Custer and "Buffalo Bill" Cody who were all part of the exciting early days of Hays City. In the late 1870's German immigrants arrived from the Volga River region of Russia and their culture and influence are still evident today with many German style celebrations and century old Volga German churches made of native limestone that are still in use today.
