Gorham flourished as a farming community, which was evidenced by the 3 or 4 grain elevators that were in the area along the railroad tracks where United Ag Service is now located.
The discovery of oil and the war years all had an effect on Gorham's growth and directions. The Oswald #1, discovered in 1923, is located 10 miles north of Gorham.
In 1944, Gorham had 3 grocery stores, 4 filling stations, a bank, a barber shop, a cream station, a car repair shop, a medical doctor, a hotel and coffee shop, a post office, a lumber yard, 2 beer joints, a telephone office, a Catholic and Community Church, a Catholic and public grade school and a rural high school.
Anderson Drug Store, a favorite hangout for teenagers was located in the area now occupied by Gorham State Bank.
